Transmission

Electric Power Transmission is the wheeling of bulk power from Generating stations to Distribution utilities to fulfil demand from end consumers. With generating stations located near resource rich areas, the power has to be transferred across a long distance to reach the end consumer. This tranmssion network or power grid transfers power at high voltages (typically > 110kV) to reduce the losses in long distance transmission. Sub-transmission systems might also be part of the transmission system as connecting a distribution station directly to such high voltages might harm the large expensive equipments.
To ensure safe, secure and predictable operation, the entire network is typically monitored in real time at a control center at state / regional / national level. With multiple sources and loads connected to the grid, the stability of the gird to prevent large transients and overload conditions are critical to avoid brown-outs and lack-outs. Being the intermediary between generating stations and distribution entities, the coordination and control of market operations like ABT systems are also carrried out by the transmission utilities. Maintaining Grid stability, Energy Accounting and system wide of view of wide spread tranmission assets thus becomes key to all transmission utilities and the entire power system.
