AMI For Loss Accounting

With electrical power demand increasing year by year, energy balancing and loss accounting has become a key focus area apart from improving the generation capacity. Distribution companies across the globe have been mandated to reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, which reflect the difference in energy inputted into the system and the final billed energy. In the wake of recent technology developments and a move to the smarter grid, base-lining the data for loss reduction is the first critical step towards reducing the losses. Kalkitech solution for distribution loss accounting includes Substation feeder monitoring, Distribution Transformer Monitoring and HT monitoring to analyze the technical loss aspects as well as become a critical input to the SCADA/ DMS systems.
Mounting AT&C losses has been a point of concern for distribution utilities. These losses can be attributed to different issues like overloading of existing equipments, low HT:LT ratio, low billing efficiency, low collection efficiency, meter tampering, absence of proper accounting/ auditing practises. Monitoring and correction of AT&C losses is today, one of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for distribution utilities and are measured as follows:
ATC Loss(%) = (Energy Input – Energy Realised)X100 / Energy Input
Gathering baseline data for the KPI involves metering the HT high value segment as well as the feeders and Distribution Transformers (DTR). Ideally each feeder is a revenue generator and the feeder meter value(M) should reflect the sum of all DTR meters (m1, m'1... m''' 1) and HT meters (m2, m'2 .... m''''2) connected to it. Kalkitech solution banks on its expertise in metering solutions and SCADA/ DMS consultancy experience. The solution automates the entire process of data acquisition in real time and includes intelligent modems connected to Meters at DTR & HT consumer end, and a substation data concentrator unit (like SYNC 2xxx), meter interface units (like SYNC 15xx) to collect Substation Feeder meter data.

The data collected at the field level is sent to the data collection centre through communication channels like GPRS/ GSM/ CDMA/ PSTN/ Fibre optic based on the existing infrastructure and availability. The solution also supports a host of proprietary as well as open protocols for metering like DLMS, Modbus and ANSI. The M2M gateway (Kalkitech SYNC 4000) situated at the central data collection centre, routes the data to the Meter Data Acquistion System (MDAS)/ head end system (Kalkitech SYNC 5000). The metering head end system will be connected to any custom solution for baselining the data for AT&C losses as well as to other SCADA/ DMS systems.

DTR monitoring & HT consumer monitoring is made possible through the intelligent modem/ remote metering node (Kalkitech SYNC 1000) placed on each of the DTR/ HT meters. These modems will help collect the data through optical/ serial port of the meter and send it over the desired communication channel like GPRS to the central collection system. In case of substation feeder meters, they are connected to the DCU through RS 485 multidrop (thus reducing other communicaion channel deployment costs) and the data is sent to the head end system. At the head end is Kalkitech's SYNC5000, a MDAS that collects data from meter on various protocols/ format, store it temporarily in database and send it across to high end systems like meter data management system, settlement system, billing system or SCADA/ DMS system. It supports various standard adapters like IEC61968-6 webservice, IEEMA MIOS CDF format, DLMS and proprietary file formats like ASCII, CSV, XML, others. The same solution can also cater to data acquisition regarding various parameters required by the distribution utility like Instantenous load profiles and event conditions with respect to specific locations like Feeder/ DT metering, interface/ boundary points. One of the key highlights of the solution is the extended security and integrity it provides to the data through various protocol related as well as communication related measures.
