Generation Control Center Solution
Kalkitech’s Generation Control Center / Generation Control Room (GCC / GCR) solution is ideal for Generation Companies which have a diverse generation portfolio that might consist of Coal fired, Gas fired and / or Hydro-run generating plants. For most established generation companies, the power plants might have been commissioned over a long period of time and might be operating with varied technologies of different vendors making the integration process complex and difficult to achieve. The GCR solution from Kalkitech seamlessly integrates the entire ecosystem and also gives the provision to drill down to a plant level generation.
To manage and control the complete generation portfolio, it is also essential for the generation company to integrate the data from all the plants onto an enterprise level platform at the corporate level. The GCC function sitting at the control center helps to address all these key requirements of a generation company including integration, top to bottom drill down facility, regulatory compliance for grid participation, revenue maximization by minimizing operational costs, and optimal load allocation between thermal and hydro power plants.
Support Documents
Kalkitech GCC solution stream lines the communication channels and integrates it into a central system at the headquarters. The system helps to reduce fuel cost and increase revenue through optimized Plant Performance Monitoring, proper Merit Order Rating and Load Dispatch of units by strictly following ABT regime.
The GCR communicates with the plant for accessing specific information and combines it with the information received from Load Dispatch Center. High availability architecture using Storage Area Network ensures retention of information and considerably reduced the possibilities of down times. A typical architecture would involve Kalkitech’s SYNC protocol convertors and data concentrators and intelligent power plant optimization software ELTRIX.
The power plants normally have a local SCADA server, database and data connectivity. The plant parameter data captured from different units by SCADA Data Acquisition System using LAN is consolidated. The data is stored at plant level databases as well as HQ-GCR level databases by using different communication techniques like leased line / FO / MPLS connections.
The power plant parameter data along with the processed data (performance data) from each plant is replicated and sent to the central database in HQ-GCR at predefined regular intervals. The servers at GCR location will be provided with box-level redundancy and configured in high availability mode. In case of database crash at any plant, the plant data is restored from HQ-GCR. A built-in disaster recovery can also be provided in the system.

ABT Module
Data from Special Energy Meters is acquired and then transferred to Generation Plant Monitoring System server. ABT related data like Declared Capacity (DC), Scheduled Generation (SG), Actual Generation and Frequency, from server is made available both at plant level and at Enterprise level. The ABT application performs the energy accounting and billing and the various charges like Capacity Charge receivable, Energy Charge receivable, Incentives receivable, UI Charge payable / receivable, mis-declaration charges payable and revision charge payable, are calculated by the solution for each plant individually.
Merit Order Dispatch Module
After receiving generation schedule from LDC, the MOD module computes the cost of generation for each unit. Further the module arrives at optimal load distribution of different units by using the fuel cost curves.

Alarm and Event Display
The solution has a warning system in which an alarm occurs when the value of an analog point crosses the pre-defined alarm units. Alarm data is logged and displayed for diagnosis.

ELTRIX MOR Module
ELTRIX Merit Order Rating (MOR) module makes use of the fact that every generating unit has its own operating characteristics, shut down and startup costs, total cost of generation and plant efficiency. When such generating units are grouped together for scheduling or Automatic Generation Control (AGC), there exists a tremendous possibility of ensuring that the required schedule is met by keeping overall cost of generation for the group of units as minimum by achieving an optimal allocation amongst the units. MOR can be done for day ahead and day of operation, with a granularity to time blocks for which generation is scheduled.

Historian
Historian is a real-time data software for acquiring, storing and displaying large amounts of operations and engineering information. It collects data from Communicator deep within the enterprise and stores it in a highly compressed format, allowing time-series data to be stored online in its original resolution. It enables accurate and timely performance-based decisions that improve operating costs. Historian stores the parameters relevant for identifying the performance of individual equipments. Along with the process parameter it continuously records the status of equipment. Kalkitech has partnered with INSTEP Software LLC to provide their leading historian application eDNA as a solution.
