Load Shedding & Power Management

Load Shedding & Power Management
Industries are operated at critical conditions to meet increased production targets across the world. In view of the above, plant equipments are operated very near to its tolerance limits which is defined in terms of capacity, stability and reliability of operations. In such operating condition, failure of single or multiple equipment causes severe power system oscillations in the network, which can even lead to a partial/total black outs of the plant. Long durations required for restoration of the power system after a black out increases production losses and recovery time. In certain cases chocking/ surging of the batch process does permanent/partial damages to the plants equipments and for metal/oil industries which is catastrophic. Financial losses due to critical equipment failures are very high and for any energy intensive plants this need to be avoided or minimized. Present day plant operators are giving more emphasis on operational efficiency and improvements on productivity considering security and reliability of the plant. To meet the present day operational challenges an effective tool is required to identify system anomalies such as technical/commercial losses, plant in-efficiencies and also to determine weak links of the power system. Kalkitech's Power & Energy Management Systems are designed for energy intensive industries to protect industrial power network from partial/total system collapses with minimal impact on the process operations. It also act as an effective decision support system for mangers to correct various anomalies in the system.

Kalkitech Power & Energy Management Systems (PEMS) for industries include:
  • Energy Network Monitoring
Enhanced monitoring and visualization system often helps operators to monitor and control plant equipments remotely. Properly archived power system data enables engineers to perform data analysis as well as system analysis to identify weak links and failure reasons of the network equipments and in-efficiencies in the system. Energy Network Monitoring solutions integrates monitoring devices, communication platforms and HMI softwares. The system is built on preferred communication solutions which matches with plant infrastructure and incorporates customized displays/reporting/ data archiving to meet customer needs.
  • Integrated Load Management
Load shedding applications are very critical in improving power system stability of the electrical network. During equipment failures/ scheduled interchange violations/ capacity over runs, Kalkitech PEMS system automatically triggers load shedding application. On initiation of such triggers the Load Shedding modules shall start the tripping of non critical loads on a operator set priority. Tripping will be based on real time power balance calculations and priority configured for the feeder. Kalkitech has the capabilities to offer these solutions on any PLC/RTU supporting IEC-61131-3 programming standards.
  • Power Sharing Management & Plant Performance Opimization for CPPs
Most of the industries are supported by their own captive power plants with multiple generators running in parallel. In addition to generator units, on-shore plants will have connection to grid for scheduled exchanges. The power exchanges can be based on operation strategies (import/export) desired by the plant. When multiple units are operated in parallel, each unit has to be controlled proportionally, considering different plant objectives. This includes, spinning reserves and non spinning reserves, active and reactive capability limits of the units, efficiency. Similarly when plant electrical network disconnects from the grid, system voltage and frequency for the islands need to be maintained within its tolerance limits. Kalkitech PEMS system dynamically controls interchange schedules and critical network parameters within its tolerance limits. Special modules supervises all the generators operating in parallel in a controlled manner. Kalkitech can also provide its ELTRIX Plant Performance Optimization & Diagnostics (POD) module for captive power plant. This software provides a number of optimization and diagnostics functionalities for Gas fired and Coal fired power plants. When combined with ELTRIX Plant Performance Management (PPM) module, it gives a complete solution for Performance Analysis Diagnostics and Optimization (PADO).
  • Decision Support System
Continuous evaluation of power system network is required for understanding “what if” scenarios of the plant as well as for arriving optimal operation strategies. As the power system keeps getting complex, its difficult to find out solutions manually. They provide on line systems analysis capability to the SCADA solutions. Grid Integration of CPPs and compliance to regulatory requirements are also supported by Kalkitech ELTRIX decision support system.
