Remote Asset Monitoring

Monitoring the performance and health of equipments placed at remote locations are critical for OEMs to maximize asset returns, reducing inventory losses and improving quality of service. The huge costs involved in mobilizing assets make remote asset monitoring highly economical for even rental equipments. Typical assets to be monitored in power systems include boiler, turbine, engines and other T&D equipments. Operational parameters are acquired from existing PLC systems of the individual equipments, which typically communicate on utility protocols like Modbus or other M2M channels. Kalkitech remote asset monitoring solution involves SCADA based M2M data acquisition system that enables equipment owners to easily observe, track and take preventive actions to optimize performance.

Kalkitech solution for remote asset monitoring includes data acquisition solution, asset monitoring SCADA software and alarm messaging tool. All the remote locations shall be connected to the central station over Internet with each location having a wireless broadband connectivity. Central Data Accumulator (CDA) and Plant Data Accumulator (PDA) establish VPN connectivity for secure data exchange. Local Area network at central station shall have standalone servers for CDA, Database, SCADA / HMI and Asset Management system.

The data acquisition solution has two modules – Plant Data Accumulator (PDA) and Central Data Accumulator (CDA). There will be an RDBMS Database system associated with the Central and Plant software, which shall store the accumulated data from the existing PLCs and data acquisition modules. The software deployed at the Plant shall acquire and store the data from the PLCs and data acquisition modules which will be sent to Central Station. The Central station software will collect and store the plant data from all the locations. This will be made available to Asset Monitoring System. All the configurations for PDA communication shall be carried out at Central station system and applied at the Plants. Plant level assets to be monitored through existing PLCs and Data Acquisition (DA) modules. The Communication with the PLCs and DA modules will be through Modbus protocol over RS485 networks.
System architecture for Remote Asset Monitoring System:

Plant Data Accumulator (PDA)
The PDA collects data from existing PLCs and field data through input modules and stores in a RDBMS database. The Data collected by PDA will be sent to CDA at Central Station.

The typical PDA Modules are listed below:
  • Modbus Driver Module
  • I/O interface Module
  • Data SYNC Module
  • Configuration Module
  • Database Module
Central Data Accumulator
CDA receives the plant real time data from PDA located at various locations. The field data collected through PDAs will be stored in Server Database using the Data SYNC Module. The Central Software has a GUI module for configuring the PDAs at each Plant. This configuration will be saved in the database and will be updated at Plants.
CDA Modules include:
  • Configuration GUI
  • Data Sync Module
  • Database Module
The Central Station Software uses RDBMS based Database server for data saving. This can be used as a historical database with easy mechanism to access the data at any point of time. RDBMS works primarily with SQL (Structured Query Language) for insert / modification, retrieving and optimization of the huge data volume handled. Also it allows the user to store the data in a structured format so that redundant data can be avoided. SCADA / HMI and Asset Management System shall be accessing the Server through standard database interfaces like ODBC or other connection interfaces for all plant data requirements. PDA and CDA will communicate through will be TCP/IP Socket communication. CDA at the central station shall be provided with redundancy optionally.

SCADA System
Operational parameters and asset performance data shall be presented to the central station personnel on a SCADA/HMI system. SCADA system has ODBC interface to connect to the database. The system can have an interface to the utility’s ERP system. Plant level and Enterprise level dashboards, graphical screens, alarms, trends and history will be available in the SCADA system. The SCADA can also be provided with redundancy if required.

Alarm Messaging Software
Alarm messaging software monitors Alarm occurrences and sends SMS and Emails to configured users. Alarm messaging software has GUI modules for configuring alarm tags and user Contact details. It only requires an email account, GSM Modem and SIM card for sending SMS and Email alerts.
