Wind Farm Monitoring
A typical large wind farm is spread across a huge distance and will consist of hundreds of Wind Energy Converters (WEC) or wind turbines. With the cost of assets in a wind farm being huge, proper Asset Monitoring systems needs to be in place. Each wind turbine can be connected to local office using Fiber Optic (FO) cable or other communication channels like GPRS/GSM. The SCADA then fetches the data from these WECs. Typically, a set of wind turbine is grouped and coupled and then another group is coupled and joint to form a communication network. Values read by the SCADA include Voltage, Hours of operation, kWh and kVARh.
Adding to this, regulatory authorities that monitor the grid requires the wind farms to place energy meters at the output of each WEC, before it is connected to the grid. Readings of the WEC meter needs to be taken and given to the regulatory authority. Kalkitech with its expertise in remote monitoring SCADA applications, Automated Meter Reading and Scheduling can provide the technical know-how for a grid integrated wind-farm.
Support Documents
Kalkitech asset monitoring solution for wind farm, provides a cost optimized data acquisition system at customer's monitoring center which communicates with the distributed Wind Power Plant (WPP) assets over VSAT link. The data acquisition system comprises of communication software and off the shelf SCADA/HMI software. The communication software collects operational data from remote wind power plants and provides to the SCADA in standard format. SCADA/HMI maintains a real time database and provides graphical displays and reports to the users. The SCADA system assists the customer personnel in monitoring wind farm data including generation parameters, asset status, down time and availability. The AMR system for the energy meters can then be integrated to the SCADA system to capture the complete monitoring scenario.
Communication software:
Communication software runs in the customer's office. This application uses a file service (like FTP) to retrieve files from the configured WPPs. This is a scheduled operation. The updates can be made on daily/other required time schedules. After collecting all the required files, the application running in the central application starts processing them. Processing involves reading the files, extracting the data and updating the same to a data base. The database has a ODBC interface through which the SCADA system can access the data.
SCADA/HMI software:
SCADA/HMI connects to the communication software using ODBC and access WPP operational data. System shall be configured to achieve all functional requirements of customer. Both SCADA/HMI and communication software runs on same machine. WPP is considered as primary source of the data. Optionally data acquisition from substation control system can also be included to acquire substation operational data.
Automated Meter Reading
Kalkitech's Automated Meter-data Reading (AMR) system is used to collect data from the different energy meters deployed at the WECs. The intent of AMR solution is to automate the task of data collection from each meter/location periodically, archiving meter data in database in Local site office, Graphical User Interface to display custom reports of archived data, export reports to desired format such as excel or text and scheduled sending of data to central location. The system is capable of monitoring meter health and generate alarms within seconds after a meter failure where by the wind farm operator can also inform the Grid utility and initiate meter maintenance activity.
The meter data is read by using a Meter Interface Unit (MIU – Kalkitech SYNC 15xx) connected to the meter. This MIU supports various communication channels like GPRS, Zigbee. The data from the local region can be then be collected at the local office by a Data Concentrator Unit (DCU – Kalkitech SYNC 17xx). This DCU will feed the data to the Meter Head End System (Kalkitech SYNC 5000) for further reports and analysis.
The AMR system captures real time data that can be updated to the SCADA system as well as for use by the regulatory authorities. System will have data validation functionalities and will indicate any anomalies to invite attention.
